Cholera is an infectious disease caused by Vibrio cholerae bacteria with manifestations of acute diarrhea accompanied by vomiting and severe due to enterotoxins produced by bacteria. Typical clinical manifestation is dehydration, hypovolemic shock and continue with metabolic acidosis that occurs in a very short time due to secretory diarrhea and can lead to death if not dealt with adequately. In endemic areas, especially water plays a role in cholera transmission. However, in a large epidemic transmission also occur through food or water contaminated by feces containing Vibrio cholerae.
Cholera is transmitted through the oral route. When the bacteria had escaped from the primary defense in the mouth and swallowed, it will quickly killed bacteria in the stomach acid that is not diluted. If bacteria can survive through the acidic stomach, then he will develop and stick to the mucosa in the small intestine. Alkaline atmosphere in the small intestine is a favorable medium for him to live and reproduce themselves.
