Anthrax is a zoonotic disease caused by the bacteria Bacillus anthracis, a spore-forming bacillus that can be and is transmitted to humans via infected material from contaminated animals, or contact with infected animals that causes skin lesions.
Bacillus anthracis is on the ground. Transmission occurs by direct contact with discharges of infected animals such as feces, or indirectly through the bite of flies that had been feeding on carcasses of animals. Or can also be caused by eating raw or less cooked meat from infected animals.
Spores will enter through the skin, respiratory tract, or gastrointestinal tract. Because spores can live for a long time, then the transmission can be through items made from infected animals, like wool blankets and leather belts.
