Active labor is divided into 3 distinct stages.
First stage began when it has achieved labor uterine contractions with a frequency, intensity, and duration sufficient to produce a effacement and progressive cervical dilatation. Phase one complete labor when the cervix is fully open (about 10 cm) to enable the head of the fetus through. Therefore, the first stage of labor is called cervical effacement and cervical dilatation.
Second stage of deliveries began when cervical dilatation is complete, and ends when the fetus is born. The second stage of labor is the expulsion of the fetus.
Third stage of deliveries began immediately after the fetus is born, and ends with the birth of the placenta and fetal membranes. The third stage of labor is the stage of separation and expulsion of the placenta.
