Vitamin D is a generic name of 2 molecules, namely ergocalciferol (vitamin D-2) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). Vitamin D can be formed body with the help of sunlight. When the body gets enough sunlight, vitamin D intake through food is not needed. Because it can be synthesized in the body, vitamin D can be said not vitamins, but a prohormone. When the body does not get enough sunlight, vitamin D need to be met through food. The main source of vitamin D in non-tropical regions is from food. Animal foods are the main source of vitamin D, such as egg yolk, liver, butter, and fish-liver oil. Vitamin D is relatively stable and not destroyed when food is heated or stored for long periods.
The function of vitamin D is to assist the establishment and maintenance of bone with vitamin A and vitamin C, hormo-parathyroid hormone and calcitonin, protein, and the minerals calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and fluorine.
