This eating disorder involving repeated or chronic ingestion of non-nutrients, including charcoal, clay, wool, cotton, soap, ash, paint, and soil. Age of onset is usually at the age of 1-2 years, but probably earlier. Pica usually stop at childhood, but may continue until in adolescence and adulthood. Mental retardation and lack of parental care (psychological and nutritional) are predisposing factors. Although taste and mastication is normal in infants and children just learning to walk, pica after two years of age require examination. Often there are symptoms of family disorganization, poor supervision and neglect will love. Pica appeared more prevalent in lower socioeconomic classes. Children with Pica increase the risk of lead poisoning and parasitic infections. Differential diagnosis includes autism, schizophrenia, and certain physical disorders such as Kleine-Levin syndrome.
